3 Best Travel Destinations for 2016: Start Planning! – By Dalia Al Saad

As you kick off 2016, it would be a good idea to go ahead and plan for your holidays to create unforgettable memories for a lifetime.

According to Lonely Planetthe 3 to-die-for destinations for 2016 are:

  • Top City: Kotor, Montenegro
  • Top Region: Transylvania, Romania
  • Top Country: Botswana

Well, let’s start!

  1. Our top city — Kotor!

If you’re into the Middle Ages and would love to go back in time and get a feel of it, Kotor is the place for you! Located on the coast of the Adriatic sea, this Mediterranean port will give you a glimpse of the Venetian period with its heritage sites and breathtaking architecture. So, you wouldn’t be surprised if you knew that these historical treasures are preserved by the UNESCO. If you’re a cruise ship lover, you can visit Kotor by sea while enjoying the picturesque Mediterranean landscape and sipping on your drink.

2. Our top region — Transylvania!

“Listen to them, the children of the night. What music they make!” as Bram Stoker of Dracula writes.

Ok, so by now, you envisioned Dracula’s castle (aka Bran Castle which truly exists) and a lot of beautiful greenery, but let me add that you should expect mountains, mountains, and more mountains surrounding Transylvania.  Located in the very center of Romania, this historical region also has a large number of film festivals and music concerts throughout the year for you to enjoy. Sighişoara, a Saxon fortress and a UNESCO world heritage site, is a must visit. If you love to indulge in culture and wallow in this region’s cuisine, be sure to pass by Sibiu, which is filled with coffee shops, restaurants, and museums. Sibiu is European Capital of Culture 2007 so, surely you won’t be disappointed. As for Transylvanian cuisine, don’t expect any unique regional cuisine since the food is very much influenced by Ottoman, German, Serbian, Hungarian, Romani, and Bulgarian cuisine. But hey no worries, once these harmonized, earthy flavors hit the dance floor in your mouth, your palate will be entertained by an exquisite, choreographed dance routine.

 3. Our top country — Botswana!

For all of you wildlife enthusiasts out there, Botswana is the place for you! With 70% of its area covered with the Kalahari Desert, you can rest assured that Botswana is a top-ranking safari destination in Africa. You can see herds of zebra, eland, buffalo, giraffe, and most importantly 120,000 elephants wandering around in Chobe National Park. Cutting through this vast desert, Okavango River is a unique destination to view mammals and birds as you sit in a canoe. And when the night falls, you can head to eco-friendly camps where you can enjoy the comforts of luxurious accommodations while maintaining an authentic safari experience. If you’re an art appreciator, you can’t miss the amazing spiritual, outdoor art gallery in Tsodilo Hills. As you hike the three main hills and pass by the 20,000-year-old rock paintings, you will learn about the tales of the San Bushmen who lived there around 100,000 years ago. Local people will be your personal guides, so you’ll be in good hands 🙂
