Jeddah: The Bride of the Red Sea – By Shatha Akeel

I grew up and have lived in a beautiful, crowded, and metropolitan city by the name of Jeddah. If you haven’t heard about it, this article will provide you with some interesting information about my city.

Jeddah, known for being the capital of economy and tourism, is located on the Red Sea coast in the western region of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Jeddah’s history goes back to nearly 3,000 years. The people of Jeddah remember the historical transformation of their city in the rule of the Khalifa ‘Uthman bin Affan” in the year 647 AD when he ordered to make it the main port that receives the pilgrims when they come from by sea to be taken to Mecca. Jeddah until now is the main cross point for millions of pilgrims that come by sea and air.

Old Jeddah or Al-Balad (downtown) is the historical center of Jeddah. Al-Balad attracts many tourists every year due to the presence of many historical buildings, mosques, and traditional markets known as Souks. There are many things to explore in Al-Balad specially during Jeddah Heritage Festival which takes place in the Holy Month of Ramadan.

There are lots of beautiful places in Jeddah but I believe that the most amazing view in the city is found on the Corniche which is a road that stretches along the coast for more than twenty miles and features the latest luxurious facilities and the great scenery of The Red Sea.

There you go! 🙂 I hope you enjoy what I have covered here in this short article about my beloved city, JEDDAH!
